Bernard Rosen käsikirjoittama ja ohjaama alkuperäinen Candyman (1992) oli tärkeä klassikko black horror -elokuvan historiassa. Clive Barkerin novelliin “Kielletty” (The Forbidden, 1985) perustuvassa tarinassa väitöskirjaa valmisteleva antropologi kiinnostuu köyhällä mustien asuinalueella kiertävästä urbaanista legendasta, jonka mukaan myyttinen Candyman kutsutaan esiin toistamalla hänen nimensä viisi kertaa peilin edessä. Antirasistisesta uraauurtavuudestaan huolimatta elokuva nojasi ongelmallisesti ns. valkoisen pelastajan ajatukseen, ja vuoden 2021 versio – jonka tuottajana on black horrorista valtavirtaa tehnyt Jordan Peele – onkin paitsi eräänlainen henkinen jatko-osa myös korjausliike, jolla tarina palautetaan mustan kulttuurin ja yhteisön piiriin. Julia Ducournaun elokuvat tunnetaan katsojissa rajujakin fyysisiä reaktioita aiheuttavasta kehokauhusta. Hänen toinen ohjaustyönsä Titane (2021) on shokeeraava kuvaus eristyneisyydestä, isäsuhteesta ja sukupuolen häilyvyydestä. Päähenkilö saa lapsena kalloonsa titaanilevyn onnettomuuden seurauksena ja kokee aikuisena enemmän viehtymystä koneisiin kuin yhteyttä toisiin ihmisiin. Ducournau palkittiin elokuvasta Cannesin elokuvafestivaalin Kultaisella palmulla – siihen mennessä vasta toisena naisohjaajana. Titane on kauhuleffasarjan ainoa elokuva, jonka ikäraja on K18. Sen kuvasto voi olla erityisen rankkaa – tai vapauttavaa – transsukupuolisille katsojille.
