Bernard Rosen käsikirjoittama ja ohjaama alkuperäinen Candyman (1992) oli tärkeä klassikko black horror -elokuvan historiassa. Clive Barkerin novelliin “Kielletty” (The Forbidden, 1985) perustuvassa tarinassa väitöskirjaa valmisteleva antropologi kiinnostuu köyhällä mustien asuinalueella kiertävästä urbaanista legendasta, jonka mukaan myyttinen Candyman kutsutaan esiin toistamalla hänen nimensä viisi kertaa peilin edessä. Antirasistisesta uraauurtavuudestaan huolimatta elokuva nojasi ongelmallisesti ns. valkoisen pelastajan ajatukseen, ja vuoden 2021 versio – jonka tuottajana on black horrorista valtavirtaa tehnyt Jordan Peele – onkin paitsi eräänlainen henkinen jatko-osa myös korjausliike, jolla tarina palautetaan mustan kulttuurin ja yhteisön piiriin.
